What Is the ‘Key of David’?
Here are seven points, straight out of the Bible, to help you understand this vital truth.

Revelation 3:7 says Jesus Christ has “the key of David.” What is that?
I present a weekly television program called The Key of David. We took that name right out of Revelation 3:7 and a couple other scriptures. I have written a booklet on the subject that we offer readers for free.
Do you know what the key of David is? It is one of the deepest truths in the entire Bible, but it is a mystery to most Christians. However, the more you understand it, the more it stirs your imagination. It is a message from God—the message that Jesus Christ gives His Church to deliver to this world in this end time.
The key of David message is actually Christ’s gospel—the good news He brought when He came to Earth! It gives you a specific understanding of that gospel, and it adds a royal dimension. The firstfruits—those saints called out before Christ’s Second Coming—will share the throne of David with Christ during the Millennium. If you are going to be in the Kingdom of God, you must understand the real gospel: this key of David message!
Revelation 3:7 is part of a message from Jesus Christ to His Church. These are literally His own words, in red letter: “And to the angel [or messenger] of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth.”
Christ is “he that hath the key of David.” This message comes directly from Him. He gave it to His Church, and He expects His people to share it with the world.
If you want to find God’s true Church, it has to be where the key of David message is. And where you find the key of David message, you will find Jesus Christ!
This is not the easiest truth to understand; it takes study and meditation. However, you can grasp quite a lot about it just by studying this passage in Revelation 3. Here are seven points from this short passage that will help you to understand what God is trying to show us in this end time.
1. It is the key ‘of David’
God named this transcendent message after a man—a human being just like you and me. King David was a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22) and is an important personality in this. But God wants us to realize that David is a type of all mankind.
The truth of the Bible is that God’s grand strategy is to save, and to build a relationship with, all mankind! Jesus Christ died for the world, not just a few people. He died so everyone’s sins could be forgiven. The fact that He named this key truth after a human is a clue that He wants each and every human being who has ever lived to understand this message.
This is God’s most highly exalted goal: He is recreating Himself in man! David understood that. He repented and obeyed God. He passionately submitted to God. That is why David’s name is here in Revelation 3. God’s plan is to teach every person who has ever lived to submit and repent like David—so they can be born into His Family! This is a universe-size goal God has given us. It’s hard to even imagine. You really have to study to understand the beauty and the glory of this goal.
2. Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church
“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith HE that is holy, HE that is true, HE that hath the key of David, HE that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth” (verse 7). Four times Jesus Christ is mentioned here. He is the focus. He is the Head of the Church! He is the living God, and He wants everybody to know He’s alive. He gives that key of David message, and then He opens a door to deliver that message. He directly leads His Church.
Notice that this is Christ’s message to the church in Philadelphia. That is the sixth of seven Church eras described in these chapters. The seventh era, the one we are in now, is Laodicea (verses 14-22), an era when about 95 percent of Christ’s own Church turned away from Him—and lost their Head (Colossians 2:19). Only a remnant of Philadelphia remains.
If you find and hold this key of David, you will know that Jesus Christ is the Head of His Church. He gave us that wonderful key of David message. Wherever you find that message, you will also find the “HE that hath the key of David.”
3. Christ has the key of David
Christ personally has the key of David; it is His. He gives it to us if we desire it and are willing to deliver it. We must deliver that message as a witness to the whole world. (Because of their sins, most won’t understand it today. But at least Christ’s message will be a witness against them. The Bible also prophesies of a future resurrection in which the vast majority—at that time living under God’s government—will listen to and understand Christ’s key of David message. In time, this truth will capture the imagination of the world.)
In Isaiah 40, God discusses “the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness” of religious confusion. It is God’s voice, speaking through a man, and it is crying out with the key of David message! This world has uncountable different religions and a bewildering myriad of Christian denominations. Which one is right? Can they all be right? God says no. Only one can be right, and it has the voice and declares the key of David. This is the specific message and the specific voice.
The key of David is not really that complex, although it is incredibly profound. You do have to study it, because it’s right out of the mind of God. It is the most exalted message from God in this end time. It is the royal gospel of Jesus Christ—a message about mere human beings who will become kings sitting on a throne with Christ. If people heed God’s calling and Christ’s message today, they will be the bride of Christ and sit on a throne with Him as kings and priests (Revelation 1:6). What could be more inspiring? What could be more rewarding than to give yourself to God today and receive the monumental reward awaiting His very elect?
4. Christ sets before us an open door
“I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it …” (Revelation 3:8). Christ has opened a door for His Church to deliver the key of David. It is all God’s doing—not man’s. God gives many special miracles to enable His Church to proclaim this to the world through television, booklets, magazines and other means. This is not a hidden message; it is being broadcast and published through a miraculous open door.
Christ gives the unimaginably wonderful key of David message to His people today so they will deliver it to the world. Most people only have a surface knowledge of this wonderful truth. They can’t fathom what God is talking about here. God wants everyone to wake up to the incredible depth of what He wants to give us!
5. No man can shut it
Once Christ opens a door, “no man can shut it.” Even if that man led a trillion-man army, he could not shut the door God opened! God is challenging the skeptics here. That challenge shows that God is alive! He is a living God! When He sets out to do a work, no man is going to stop Him! He uses His almighty power to make sure nobody interferes. How encouraging! God proves to us daily that He is alive.
People act like God has nothing to do with this world; but He has a lot to do with it, and with all people. He always warns when people are heading toward catastrophe—and right now, this world is heading for the worst disaster it has ever experienced! That is the time when you need God, even if you don’t know it.
The phrase “no man can shut it” implies that Satan the devil will always try to shut that door, using men to stop God’s message. There’s always an ongoing war with Satan. Satan can do a lot of damage, as he has done in this end time.
But even though he is the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4), Satan can’t shut God’s open door. He doesn’t have any power at all compared to God. We have to stay close to God so He will empower us to deliver His message. Without God’s power, we would never be able to deliver His message in Satan’s world.

6. We have kept His Word
Revelation 3:8 continues: “I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word ….” God opens this giant door for His very elect if they keep His Word. He gives them His power only if they keep His Word!
Thankfully, the very elect have kept God’s Word. Though most of God’s people have turned away from obeying God’s Word in this end time, these Philadelphians never turn away. They kept God’s Word even as others were “casting the truth to the ground” (Daniel 8:11-12; this prophetic book was written for our time today—Daniel 12:4, 9).
If you understand this wonderful message, it will change everything in your life. You will have a future that inspires and moves you! If you keep God’s Word, He says, you’ll be delivering His message through that open door, and no man, not even a trillion men, can ever stop it.
7. We have not denied His name
Revelation 3:8 concludes, “thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.” The Greek word for name includes everything that name stands for. In this case it particularly refers to Christ’s authority, His rule over His Church. Denying God’s name means denying His government.
Christ praises the Philadelphians for not denying Christ’s name—as most of God’s people have in this Laodicean era! Tragically, the great majority of God’s own Church have rejected their Head. The Laodiceans denied God’s government—they refused to let Christ rule them. They wanted to go their own way, the way of Satan’s world. As a result, Christ couldn’t give them His power, and couldn’t open a door for them. He won’t do those things unless we submit ourselves to Him! And a church without Christ as its Head can accomplish no more than a man can without his head! God can’t use such people.
But there is a remnant of faithful saints who will not deny Christ’s name! As a result, they have the power of God, and an open door that no man can shut! God makes some of the most powerful promises in the Bible here in this passage.
Spiritual Jews
“Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee” (Revelation 3:9).
King David was a Jew, as was Jesus Christ. Romans 2:29, Deuteronomy 30:6 and other scriptures explain that when someone is converted, he becomes a spiritual Jew. God’s grand strategy is to make all of us into spiritual Jews. It’s not about the physical at all. We are all spiritual Jews if we follow the Jew, Jesus Christ.
Some of God’s own people say they are Jews when they are not—God says they are lying! We have to know what is a lie and what is not. This requires that we get to know what the key of David is. We must let Christ show us so that we’ll know who the spiritual Jews are and who are the liars, because there are a lot of liars claiming to be Jews today. This is part of our war with Satan the devil. He is a liar and the truth is not in him (John 8:44).
The “synagogue of Satan” mentioned in Revelation 3:9 was a foothold Satan had inside God’s Church that became the Laodicean era (verses 14-22). The people have become blind (verses 18-19). Now God is knocking on their door, trying to get in so He can turn them back to Him (verse 20). He keeps pleading with all of His people to turn back to Him so that they can understand and achieve their wonderful key of David future!
But there is a little remnant that is clinging to Jesus Christ’s key of David message. They walk through His open door and deliver the most wonderful message imaginable. This is leading to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, when Christ will personally rule this Earth! That is the most wonderful news you could ever hear!

What is the Key of David?

Answer: The Key of David is a term found in Revelation and Isaiah. A key indicates control or authority; therefore, having the Key of David would give one control of David’s domain, i.e., Jerusalem, the City of David, and the kingdom of Israel. The fact that, in Revelation 3:7, Jesus holds this key shows that He is the fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant, the ruler of the New Jerusalem, and the Lord of the kingdom of heaven.
However, the passage in Revelation has been used inappropriately by a number of cults that ultimately descend from the Christian Identity Movement via Armstrongism. The Philadelphia Church of God, a splinter group from the Worldwide Church of God, produces a television program called Key of David.

There, the prophet tells the palace secretary Shebna that he will be replaced by Eliakim, for God “will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David” (Isaiah 22:22). The one who holds the keys has the authority. Thus, the “key of David” implies control of David’s domain, which was promised to the Messiah in both the Old and New Testaments (Isaiah 9:7; Luke 1:32).
Cultic Usage
The television show called Key of David is hosted by Gerald Flurry, the author of a book of the same name. Flurry is founder and pastor of the Philadelphia Church of God. His interpretations of Scripture include the twisting of many biblical prophecies and a reading of many other passages as being secretly prophetic. Flurry has a special interest in Revelation 3:7-13, the letter to the church at Philadelphia (the ancient city located in modern-day Turkey). Flurry claims that the “key of David” held by Christ is “the profound understanding he wants all of us to have” (Key of David, p. 10), which will lead to special “positions of authority” (p. 11) in the New Jerusalem. Flurry claims that the letter is a vision of what Christians of our time are to do, but that “only a small percentage” (p. 8) will understand this great vision, qualify to receive the special authority, and share the throne of David with Jesus.
Another major component of Flurry’s beliefs is the claim that Great Britain and the United States of America (meaning their Caucasian, Anglo-Saxon citizens) are descended from the “lost” tribes of Israel. As Israelites (he says), we are uniquely qualified to hold authority in the Kingdom and create the spiritual Israel. This belief in Anglo-Israelism has no basis in fact.
Conclusion
Paul told Timothy to avoid “myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God’s work—which is by faith” (1 Timothy 1:4). There is no “special knowledge” beyond the gospel itself that will aid salvation. Any claim beyond faith in the work of Jesus tears out the heart of the good news: that the just will live by faith (Romans 1:17). There is no great vision, special knowledge, or Jewish lineage needed, only faith in Christ.

What is the key of David?
Question: What is the key of David and what does it symbolize?
Answer: The key of David appears only twice in the Bible. The first time it appears is in Revelation where it states, "To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write . . . who holds the KEY OF DAVID" (Revelation 3:7). The speaker is the resurrected Jesus, whom John sees in a vision, and the message is to the church at Philadelphia. The possession of this key by Christ is used as proof that the Being addressing the church is God, "the Holy One, the One Who is true."
The second occurence of the key of David is in the book of Isaiah the prophet where it states, "And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder (Eliakim as an allusion or type of Christ); so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open" (Isaiah 22:22, KJV).
Unfortunately, Scripture does not directly answer your question regarding the key of David. There is a lot of conjecture and supposition on this subject but one should understand that the Bible does not specifically identify this object.
The one thing that made David unique was the promise God made to him. The Eternal, speaking through the prophet Jeremiah, prophesied of one of his descendents who would bring salvation and confirm His covenant with all (Jeremiah 33:14 - 15, 26).
Some have speculated that the covenant made to David would require a physical descendent to be ruling over at least some portion of Israel down to our present time. One explanation of this can be found in the book "Judah's Sceptre and Joseph's Birthright" written by J. H. Allen. He makes a powerful case for the lineage of rulers existing today.
A key was often worn on the shoulder of those who possessed official authority and power (see Isaiah 22). This symbolism is reiterated in the New Testament as well.
Jesus, in the book of Revelation, is said to possess several keys that unlock death and hades (or the grave, see Revelation 1:18). An angel, also in Revelation, is given one to lock the spiritual cell or 'bottomless pit' where a bound Satan will be constrained for one thousand years (Revelation 20:1).
This evidence points to a key representing, at least figuratively, the possession of power and has nothing whatsoever to do with Biblical prophecy.
Thankfully, Jesus and His apostles have given us the plan for our salvation and that salvation does not depend on some mysterious key of David or our interpretation of what it is or represents. It is, indeed, one of the most fascinating areas of study in the Bible but we should not claim to know for certain what this means. Each of us will have to decide for himself the spiritual meaning of this object.

- @Constantthin the key of David is just another way of saying the government or kingdom. the highest position of authority was to inherit the throne and kingdom of David. When you had that, you could do as you pleased as king. Clearly Jesus has that authority, to do as He pleases, open and close and no one can resist Him or ask Him what is He doing. The breastplate of judgement was attached at the shoulders. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder... This is an allusion to:
NIV Isaiah 22:20“In that day I will summon my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah. 21I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash around him and hand your authority over to him. He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the people of Judah. 22I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. 23I will drive him like a peg into a firm place; he will become a seat a of honor for the house of his father. 24All the glory of his family will hang on him: its offspring and offshoots—all its lesser vessels, from the bowls to all the jars.
The key of David is a supernatural key that has supernatural abilities to open and close. Once the key is used to close it it cannot be opened. Once the key is used to open it it cannot be closed.
Ellicot's Commentary has this to say:
The key of David.--Some early commentators saw in this key the key of knowledge which the scribes had taken away (Luke 11:52), and understood this expression here as implying that Christ alone could unloose the seals of Scripture, and reveal its hidden truth to men. In support of this they referred to Revelation 5:7-9. The fault of the interpretation is that it is too limited; it is only a corner of the full meaning. He who is "the True" alone can unlock the hidden treasures of truth. But the use of the word "David," and the obvious derivation of the latter part of this verse from Isaiah 22:22, points to a wider meaning. Jesus Christ is the true Steward of the house of David. (Comp. Hebrews 3:2; Hebrews 3:5-6.) The faulty, self-seeking stewards, the Shebnas of Jerusalem and Philadelphia, vainly claimed a right of exclusion from synagogue or church, where Jesus, the God-fixed nail in the sure place, upon which the bundle of earth's sorrows and sins might securely be suspended (Isaiah 22:23-25), the Eliakim of a greater Zion, had the key of the sacred and royal house.
When Jesus referred to the "Key of David" we know that King David; although he had sinned and suffered the consequences of sin by losing his first born son was still a believer and had a heart for God as was said "he is a man after God's own heart" ! Nevertheless, David's Kingdom was the Kingdom that Jesus Christ came out of and is the root and offspring of David. Jesus tells us in Revelation that those who repent, overcome, and keep our alliance with Him will He grant the Keys to the Kingdom of God , everlasting life ! Keys open doors and we have an open door to God through Jesus Christ to share in that Kingdom! Praise God ! The Key that opens the door opens a human heart to receive Jesus as the Son Of God and God himself in the flesh as human. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believe on Him shall not perish but have everlasting life and vs. 17 for He came not into the world to condemn it but through Him the world might be saved !!! The Key : God alone has the Key of David and God can and does come to us and can open the door and can shut the door. We can associate the "Key of David" with accomplishment (opening and closing), such as the great commission (Rev. 3:8), but more importantly with the accomplishment of relationship through the Spirit. Part of this is, each of us being as David was, "after Gods own heart"; having a tender-hearted, loving, responsive relationship with God (Acts 13:22).
Christ promises to provide His Church with the keys of the kingdom in Mt.16:19. This section proclaims: Christ is Messiah; only truly known by those to whom the Father reveals it; that upon His Own Self He will develop His called-out ones (build His Church on the Rock / Petra); nothing shall stop Him (gates of hell not prevail); and through the keys necessary to enter the Kingdom which He will gift us, we will be able to make the most important of determinations in our own lives and Church community (binding and loosing). (Mt.16:17-19)
An alternate translation of that verse makes clearer the potential of this relationship. "And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you may bind on the earth will have already been bound in heaven; and whatever you may loose on the earth will have already been loosed in heaven." (A Faithful Version) This section is primarily about the effects of relationship with Messiah, secondarily Church authority. The context of the scripture is the Spirit given ability to recognize Messiah, and everything that recognition entails.
It describes a relationship of such depth, that by the love and understanding given through the Spirit, you will be able to make the correct determinations of "binding and loosing", the most official acts of the gospel ministry (establishing doctrine, ordinations, marking, etc).
The Key of David comprises of the Holy Spirit and the full personal relationship that develops from grace to grace (Jn. 1:16). It is primarily a term of potential, something God considers "as though it already is" (Rom.4:17), and finds expression in our weaknesses , our "little strength" (Rev.3:8; 2 Corr. 12:9).
Rev. 3:7, 8, JB: “Here is the message of the holy and faithful one [Jesus] who has the key of David, so that when he opens, nobody can close, and when he closes, nobody can open: . . . I have opened in front of you a door that nobody will be able to close.”

A key is a symbol of authority as defined by the context. opening and closing is a symbol of power and access granted or denied.
Jesus comes from the line of David. "The Son of David" will inherit and possess the unique power and rights of the kingdom. A door also signifies who receives access and who does not.

The key of David speaks of the government of the Lord Jesus Christ upon us. We shall have peace no end when we submit to His government in our lives as the King sits in judgment.
Isaiah 9:6-7 KJV (6) For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (7) Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
He has the key of David. He that opens and no man shuts is about those whom He sends out in His name (authority) to speak (with an open mouth....the open door of utterance) His words in the Spirit of the Lord. He gives them a mouth and wisdom that the enemies cannot resist (no man can shut).
Luke 21:15 KJV (15) For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.
The Spirit of the LORD spoke through/by David's mouth. His Word was in his tongue.
2 Samuel 23:1-7 KJV (1) Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said, (2) The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.
Another example: Stephen, who was full of faith and power, spoke His words of which the enemies could not withstand.
Acts 6:8-11 KJV (8) And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. (9) Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. (10) And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.
But when the enemies cannot win the debate (dispute) of the subject matter, they resort to false accusations and personal attacks. They "kill" the messengers of His words with their words of wrath. They use “strength” in their words with wrath and false accusations against the speaker and cannot/will not listen. They "gnash their teeth" in rage and stop up their ears.
(11) Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.
Yet the church in Philadelphia (brotherly love) shows us how to not deny His name ….His authority…His government. He is true....as His words are true...and we are to be holy as He is holy.
Revelation 3:7 KJV (7) And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
The “open door” is the open door of utterance that speaks His true words in His name (authority). Blessed is he that comes in the name (authority ) of the Lord. Those who listen to the open door listens to Him and those who reject what is said rejects Him who speaks (see Luke 10:16).
He sets that open door of utterance before them and the church in Philadelphia who uses “little strength” towards what the open door is saying. They shut their mouths (he shuts and no man opens).
Kings will shut their mouths because of Him because what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand. (see Isaiah 52:15).
The only way...the key... to entering in to understand what is being said in the "open door" is to shut the mouth (use "little strength" in words) and hear what the Spirit is saying.
The church in Philadelphia shows brotherly love and actively hears what the Spirit is saying through the “open door” that is opened by the Lord to speak to their hearing ears.
The church in Philadelphia are quick to hear and slow to speak and slow to wrath. They are meek (having little strength) towards the open door of utterance. They do not deny His name…His authority... but observe and keep it. They keep His Word by doing it in their lives towards what they hear the Spirit saying to their ears. they do not resist the Spirit but shut the mouth to hear.
(8) I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.
But those who “dwell upon the earth” will be tempted to speak out in strength (wrath, envy, strife, etc) towards what they hear what the “open door” has to say.
Revelation 3:10 KJV (10) Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
Those who “dwell upon the earth” (dwelling on the earthly wisdom: envy, strife, wrath, covetousness, etc) will not be focusing on those things above (the wisdom from above: peace, love, joy, patience, gentleness, etc) and they are caught by surprise by those who are sent out in His authority to speak His words to their ears via the “open door” of utterance.
They will not be found “watching” but “asleep” to His righteousness and will be tempted to speak out in wrath towards what they hear the Spirit saying. Those who cannot overcome do not enter into the understanding but are left outside in the "darkness". The wicked shall not understand while the righteous enter in to understand the mysteries of the kingdom.
Colossians 3:5-6 KJV (5) Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: (6) For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
In summation, the key of David is about His government and submitting to that government which is the key to entering into His door of understanding/knowledge as He opens up the Scriptures to our hearing ears (He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches) via those who are sent out in His authority to speak His true words....with the "open door" of utterance. The "open door"...the open mouth that speaks via the Spirit...is to be met with little resistance (little strength, the shut mouth) in response and yielding to His government.

The key of David unlocks intimacy and prayer. David was a man who lived in grace centuries before the gospel of God grace was unveiled. In that sense, the Key of David allowed him to view the future and live in the grace it would reveal.
3:8 This open door is likely an invitation to come into the fullness of Gods kingdom of Joy and power in the holy Spirit (Romans 14:17; Rev 4:1). Or it may refer to an open door of opportunity to give witness to others of Gods power and grace (1 Cor. 16:9, Col 4:3)

Eliakim (a picture of Jesus) is to have unlimited control. The doors he opens (looses) are doors of revelation, treasures, favor, and opportunity. When he closes (binds) those doors, no amount of human striving can open them.

The "Key," in the scriptures is symbol of government,authority and power.(Isaiah 22:20-22)
God made a covenant for an everlasting kingdom with King David of Israel:

King David and his descendants ruled in Jerusalem on God's throne until its destruction by the Babylonians, because that kingdom turned wicked , so God executed his judgement in fulfillment of the prophesy of Ezekiel.

About 600 years later , God send his angel Gabriel to the Jewish virgin Mary, a descendant of King David and said to her:

"I was dead and now I am alive", Jesus is referring to his own experience, God did not leave his Son in hades, on the third day God personally raised him into a spirit being , gave him immortality,( Rom. 6:9, 1 Tim. 6:15-16) but also God gave Him "the keys of death and hades."
Having possession of those keys, Jesus is able to raise his faithful followers from the dead. When he does so, he confers upon the spirit-anointed members of his congregation the precious gift of immortal heavenly life, just as his Father did for him.

The key to resurrect the dead.
The "key" also includes authority to raise the dead from the confines of the grave.

The key of the abyss.
John in his vision describes an angel with that key casting Satan into abyss and sealing him for a thousand years, obviously by the use of the "key" of authority.

The Lord Jesus is the successor to King David:
Luke 1:31-33 (DRB) Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever. And of his kingdom there shall be no end.
In the Davidic Kingdom, there was a prime minister or vicegerent of the King, who held the keys of the Kingdom; whether these were literal, or referred to delegated authority, they amount to the same symbol of authority, whichever is meant:
Isaiah 22:20-23 (DRB) And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliacim the son of Helcias, 21 And I will clothe him with thy robe, and will strengthen him with thy girdle, and will give thy power into his hand: and he shall be as a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Juda. 22 And I will lay the key of the house of David upon his shoulder: and he shall open, and none shall shut: and he shall shut, and none shall open. 23 And I will fasten him as a peg in a sure place, and he shall be for a throne of glory to the house of his father.
The key of David is not 'shared' by the King, and by the King's vicegerent, but represents the Kingly authority, and, when spoken of with respect to the vicegerent (it's hard not to see this delegated key authority in Matthew 16 with reference to Peter), the delegated authority of the same is referred to.
Thus, Jesus, as the Davidic King, holds the power of binding and loosing in His Kingdom - which comprises of all creation: what he shuts, no one will open, and whatever he opens, no one will shut (of which, "binding and loosing" was the first century equivalent terminology: cf. Mt. 23:4).

Access to the third heaven, and getting out of the state of death, was no longer permitted to men, this conjecture was represented by the keys of bronze and iron.
